We had an hour to wait for David to get off work. It's a beautiful night, perfect weather...why not spend the hour playing outside, I thought. I let Dennis choose which track, which park, and he wanted the track at City Park. I had thought (erroneously) that we could walk laps together, but he wanted no part of that. Instead, we got the soccer ball out of the car and walked through the trees bordering the track and found a soccer field. We played a vigorous 20 minute game. He beat me 7 goals to 5. I didn't know he could play, but there he was, running like mad and kicking that ball exactly where he wanted it to go. He even stole it from me a couple of times! He wants to be on a team so much, and though registration is going on now for ages 3 to 5, I'm afraid the time slot for practice will conflict with the swim lessons we've already scheduled for April. Such a dilemma. But, at age 3, should he really play organized ball? This is a kid who cheats at Hungry Hungry Hippos! Game rules aren't that important to him at this point.
We spent the rest of our outdoor hour running races across the football field and awarding each other pretend trophies. We frolicked in the grass, him turning somersaults and me doing cartwheels (a skill I thought I'd lost or maybe never had). We giggled lots, tackled each other some, and actually did a lap or two on the track. It was so much fun!
Quote of the day: "Mommy, can we make a sandwich with real sand?".
