wee wee wee

I grabbed his toe this morning, and before I could even say "this little piggy...", he said "weeeeeee". Wee was the theme of the day, indeed! He escaped during a diaper change and wee'd all over the place, nailing his little tiger backpack, his animal train, and his shape sorter. No lasting damage, other than one horrified mommy, and all has been washed and restored.

He was reading his Goodnight Moon book to me today (turning the pages and babbling seriously), and he stopped his reciting to point out the balloon, which he referred to as "Ball! ball!". I didn't know he could point with one finger yet (he can), and I was very impressed that he had connected the ball in the picture with what it actually is. He'd been picking up his ball in the room and saying ball all day, and I am so proud that he associated the picture with it.

He said applesauce today. I was asking him if he wanted it with lunch, and he said "app-saw, app app app, appsaws". And he shared breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the dog. He says her name more clearly every day, and Honey is even starting to understand that he's calling her. Or she knows that food is coming from the high chair, at any rate.

There are eleven teeth now, and the one he's getting right now is a molar. It's the reason for his fits of crying this week, and we're so glad to know the cause. I was afraid we were entering a new developmental stage that involved temper, but apparently not. He's Drool King at the moment, had a low fever tonight, chewed vigorously on everything, and we caught a glimpse of a molar coming through on one side and another about to come through on the other. He's all out of sorts. We let him have a pedialyte popsicle tonight, and that seemed to ease the pain somewhat. It turned him blue, but he was at least a happy little smurf.

He also has major diaper rash. For one year, no rash, and now we can't seem to get him to clear up. We've tried all the ointments, and the doc suggested letting him soak his bottom in water with baking soda to help neutralize the chafed/burned area. We parked him in his baby tub in front of his portable dvd player (Toy Story) thinking the movie would distract him enough to stay in the tub for a while. We should have tarped the room before we did this, as he went splash crazy when we set him in the tub. He giggled and splashed for quite a while, then when we took him out of the tub, he escaped and stepped back in. He cried for more bathtime, but he was pretty pacified when we took him to the kitchen and fed him (and Honey) dinner. I hope he's able to sleep through the night tonight--he kept waking up last night. At least we know why now. And there were lots of giggles today while he 'helped' me clean his room. I taught him how to take the blocks off the stacker and put them in a bucket (instead of flinging them everywhere), but he's not very interested in putting toys back on the shelf yet. He put one toy bird up, I praised him, and then he swept all the birds onto the floor and walked away. He is learning how to work his shape sorter, too, and it was fun to watch him turning the shapes in his little hands, trying to fit them into the holes (this was before he peed in it). He made a mark with his crayons today but quickly lost interest and carried the crayon over to his giraffe ball spinner and stuffed the crayon in it. The crayons are rounded plastic animals with a washable crayon protruding from one end, so they do look a little like balls (crayola first marks crayons). At least today he didn't try to dismantle the crayons. We let him play with them right after Easter, and he tried to pry them apart like they were eggs.

He's sleeping soundly now, after having tuned and retuned his music box. I heard Beethoven start again and again and again, then Mozart, and then he finally let it play through without pushing the button again. I hope the motrin we gave him before bed will let him get some relief from the tooth pain. We'll know soon enough, I suppose.
